My biggest mistake in parenting, actually with everything in my life, has been to allow others to influence my decisions. Listening to the professionals on parenting, reading the latest parenting book, or just old school advice can never address one important fact. None of the sources know my children. The few times that I've allowed this parenting system to dictate my decision has either met with failure or just created another problem. I'm slow sometimes, but I now know why I hate parenting "professionals".
If you know your children, you ought to be able to listen to your instincts to make the right decisions.
